Scripture Reading: Romans 7:1-12
Title: No Longer Bound
Key Verse: Romans 7:6 (ESV) ~ But now we are released from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit and not in the old way of the written code.
Devotional:
Maria had been trying to break free from her pattern of explosive anger for years. Every time her teenage son left dishes in the sink or forgot his chores, she'd erupt with harsh words that left them both wounded. She'd apologize, promise to do better, set up accountability systems, even put Bible verses on her mirror. But the cycle continued, leaving her feeling trapped and defeated.
Then one morning, as she sat with her coffee feeling the familiar weight of yesterday's failure, something shifted. Instead of making another resolution or trying harder, she simply prayed, "Jesus, I can't break this pattern. But you already have." For the first time, she wasn't asking for strength to change—she was acknowledging that the change had already happened through Christ's death and resurrection.
That afternoon, when her son left his backpack blocking the hallway, Maria felt the familiar surge of irritation. But instead of white-knuckling her way through it, she remembered: "I died to this. This anger doesn't define me anymore." She calmly asked him to move it, and when he rolled his eyes, she found herself responding with patience that surprised them both.
Paul reminds us that we've been "released from the law"—not just the ceremonial law, but the deeper law of sin and death that once held us captive. We're no longer bound to repeat the same destructive patterns, enslaved to the same fears, or trapped in the same spiritual emptiness. Through Christ's death, we died to what once bound us. Through His resurrection, we live in the freedom of the Spirit.
This isn't about trying harder or being more disciplined. It's about recognizing that the chains have already been broken. We serve now "in the new way of the Spirit"—not through gritted-teeth effort, but through the life of Christ flowing through us.
