Scripture Reading: Hebrews 5:11-6:3
Title: No Neutral Ground in Faith
Key Verse: Hebrews 6:1 (ESV) ~ Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God,
Devotional:
A mountain climber once shared that the most dangerous part of any ascent isn't the steep cliffs or harsh weather—it's the false plateaus. These are seemingly flat, safe areas where climbers often stop to rest, thinking they can stay indefinitely. But mountain weather doesn't allow for extended stays. The temperature drops, storms roll in, and what seemed like a safe resting place becomes a trap. The only safety is in continuing the climb toward the summit.
The Christian life operates on the same principle. There is no spiritual plateau where we can safely park our faith and coast. Hebrews 6:1 calls us to "move beyond" and "be taken forward to maturity" because spiritual stagnation is actually spiritual decline in disguise. When we stop growing in our knowledge of God's Word, stop deepening our prayer life, or stop actively serving others, we don't simply stay where we are—we begin to drift backward.
Just as a child who refuses solid food will eventually become malnourished despite having once been healthy, believers who remain content with "spiritual milk" will find their faith weakening over time. The writer of Hebrews understood that spiritual growth requires intentional forward movement, not passive maintenance.
